Campton Place

General Information

What to expect: A serene oasis at the edge of Union Square, Campton Place, a Taj Hotel comprises two handsome buildings from the early 1900s. The hotel has been thoroughly updated in recent years while retaining its classic European charm. With fresh flowers, original art, Oriental rugs, and marble floors, the intimate lobby sets an elegant and warmly inviting tone. Sophisticated travelers return here year after year for the gracious service, desirable location, and well-appointed rooms.

Amenity highlights: One of the city’s most acclaimed dining rooms, the Campton Place Restaurant showcases French cuisine prepared with fresh California ingredients. The club-like bar, dressed in deep-auburn madrona wood and caramel-colored leather, offers specialty and traditional cocktails, fine wines by the glass, and a bistro menu. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available in the lobby, restaurant, bar, and meeting rooms.

Insider tip: In a city filled with remarkable experiences, one of the most unusual is the Audium, a small, otherworldly theater of sound. The audience is enveloped in utter darkness as a composition of “found sounds” moves about the room’s 169 speakers. The effect is surreal, disorienting, and mesmerizing. Performances are held most Friday and Saturday nights (admission). The Audium is about a mile from the hotel.

Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, and other neighborhoods offer steep sidewalks and stairways, intriguing historic buildings, and stellar views. The colorful, raucous birds made famous in the movie The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill can sometimes be seen—and heard—in the trees along the Filbert Steps and the Greenwich Steps on the eastern face of Telegraph Hill.
